Academics & Special Programs
Across all grade levels, Lane Elementary provides a strong foundation of academic learning. Teachers in all classes structure their class curricula using the Elementary FCPS Program of Studies (POS), which is based on the state of Virginia's Standards of Learning (SOL) objectives. Our core curriculum consists of Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Language arts are integrated throughout the curriculum so that children realize that reading and writing are the basis for success in all subject areas. Students in grades 3 through 6 are tested in the spring in these core areas through the administration of statewide SOL Tests. These tests
FIT Time fits in well! FIT Time, which stands for Flexible Intervention Time, is a key part of our core curriculum in all grade levels. At the end of each full day, Tuesday through Friday, students have 45 minutes of time dedicated to working on current concepts and skills. No new information is taught during this time period. Students who need extra help in certain areas receive extra support; students who have already mastered concepts participate in enrichment projects. The FIT program allows for increased differentiation and individualized instruction within the classroom, and preliminary test data is already showing what a strong impact it is having on our students at all levels.
In addition to the four core subject areas, all students in all grade levels receive instruction in "Specials" each week - Physical Education (P.E.), General Music, Art, Computer Lab, and Library. Most classes have P.E. and Music twice a week for about a half hour each time, Art once per week for at least an hour, and Computer Lab and Library once a week for about a half hour each.
Students in grades 5 and 6 may add Choral Music and either Band or Strings to their weekly schedules. Fourth-grade students may choose to study a string instrument.
Advanced Academic Program (AAP) (formerly known as Gifted & Talented)
Lane offers several optional academic programs to support the individual needs of its students. Level III Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services are offered on a weekly basis to students who qualify for the program. Lane is also proud to offer Multiage classes, a special program where students in 1st and 2nd grade share a classroom and learn together, from each other as well as their teacher. Placement in the Multiage program is not based on academic achievement but on parent choice. It is designed to be a two-year program, with students remaining together and with the same teacher for both their 1st and 2nd grade years. All kindergartners will receive information about this program in the spring.

Although Fairfax County does not run after-school programs for elementary students, Lane is lucky to have both an active PTA and dedicated teachers who do often organize after-school enrichment classes and activities for our students. In the past, the PTA has offered a science club, a math club, a running club, language classes, drama classes, cooking classes, arts & crafts classes, basketball and lacrosse. Lane teachers currently lead an environmental club, a chess club, and Girls on the Run. More exciting opportunities are being added all the time.
Technology is integrated into all classes at Lane Elementary - not just general education classrooms, but specials like Music, P. E,. and Art as well. All general-education classrooms are equipped with SmartBoards and the teachers use them every day. In addition, we offer two fully-equipped Computer Labs, which all classes use on a regular basis during the school week. We also employ mobile laptop carts that teachers can check out for their students to use for work in the classroom.
Elementary schools in the Hayfield Pyramid are proactively investigating best practices for student use of personally owned technology tools for instructional purposes. Once a protocol for personal technology use is put in place, elementary students in the Hayfield Pyramid schools will be allowed to use personal technology in the schools.
