Madison HS, Counseling Newsletter

Hi Parents! It’s hard to believe how quickly the years have flown by, as well as to see the change in your students from 9th grade until now! We wish you and your family the best and please tell you students to visit us. We love to see them again!
Please visit the Student Services section of Madison’s website by going to the following link:

Madison Counseling & Student Services has posted several tidbits on our Facebook page to help keep students and parents informed about upcoming events, reminders and student services information.  Click on Madison Counseling and  Student Services  to view our page (you don’t need to be a Facebook member to view our postings).  However, IF you are a member, please choose to “LIKE” us and “SHARE” this page.

Summer School 2016- Please refer to the FCPS Summer School site for more information.

Next year’s courses- please take another look at your student’s progress as this year closes, especially in Math and Language, to determine if they are correctly placed in their courses for next year. Changes will be made only until June 28, and once the school year starts, students are expected to complete all the courses they are attempting. If you would like to make a change, please email your student’s high school counselor.

Online courses next year- Students can take an online course during the school year to replace a course they would be taking during the school day. Please contact your student’s counselor if you would like to do this. The deadline for doing this is Aug. 26, and after this date an online course will only be approved if there is an unresolvable conflict with the student’s schedule. Not liking a teacher once students get their schedule is NOT a reason for then trying to switch to an online course.

Students not attending Madison next year- If your student will not be attending Madison next year, please contact Jill Hendelman at to let her know as soon as possible.
Final report cards will be mailed home during the first week in July.  Please be on the lookout for it.  Remember that your student’s the G.P.A. is determined by final grades ONLY.

Graduation - Robinson Field House June 15, 4:30 pm

Students are to report by 3:00pm. Remind your senior not to bring any belongings including the following: phones, purses, cameras, sunglasses, keys. etc. There is nowhere to store these items. Tickets are required for graduation.  Four tickets will be distributed to students on June 14.  Requests for up to four additional tickets must be made in writing to Ms. Hendelman at in the Counseling Office.  There are a very limited number of extra tickets.

Name Pronunciation at Graduation- If you have a concern that your name is frequently mispronounced and want to make sure that it is pronounced correctly at graduation, please have your student see Mr. Gambarelli in the Counseling office. This is important, as sometimes he can’t control his Noo Yawk accent.

10th & 11th Grade News
College Visits – Summer college visits are still a fantastic idea even though there may not be as many college students on campus.  Remind your son or daughter to take pictures and notes about the college.  Once they’ve seen more than two colleges, things tend to run together.  This way your student may look back at their pictures and notes.  Ideally, THEY will be the ones with the pictures and notes for what they did and didn’t like!

College Essays - During early June, the counselors will be visiting junior English classes to help them with their upcoming college essays, an increasingly important part of the college application. Our expectation is that students will be working on these essays over the summer, and will have a workable essay (at least in draft form) by the beginning of the next school year.  There will soon be a College Essay Writing section available online at
